Chapter Nine

How could one night's events not only define her entire life but also punctuate it and give it multiple meanings as well? Paranormal events happened, nonhuman entities existed, and her father was alive.

Cindy stood in the inn's hallway and watched Thrain go off in search of Trojan. She had twelve days to fly to Scotland to meet her father at their ancestral castle, and nothing would stop her from going. Within the same time frame, she'd have to come to terms with what Thrain would reveal tomorrow. She wasn't stupid. If his explanation was as simple as a genetic anomaly, he wouldn't have put off telling her.

Slowly, she walked toward the parlor. And what will your feelings be for Thrain at the end of those twelve days? She had no doubt her emotions were in the first stages of major involvement, because her level of sexual excitement had always been linked with her emotional connection to a man. And Cindy had absolutely never experienced sexual excitement on the scale she'd felt tonight. But two nights and one real orgasm did not a relationship make. She'd think about Thrain when she was calm and recovered from this night.

Most of her guests had already headed for their rooms, but she'd check in the parlor just to make sure that Gerry, Donna, and Kim weren't there. Maybe profuse apologies and some insincere groveling would save her the cost of a truckload of shoes.

On the way into the parlor, she passed the four men Thrain had labeled as dangerous. They looked like ordinary men until Cindy stared into their eyes. She shivered. Their eyes were cold, emotionless, and… hungry. Why hadn't she noticed before?

One of them stopped in front of her. Dark-haired, with ordinary features, he would have earned nothing more than a passing glance if she'd met him on the street. But tonight, something about him caused her to back up a step. Maybe her enhanced senses made her too sensitive to people.

"Your inn is a wonderful getaway, a great place to hunt for the unexpected. You have no idea how much I've looked forward to meeting you and staying here. Maybe we can share a drink before I leave." His smile hinted at hidden meanings and dark intents.

"I'll make sure we do that." Maybe. Even though she suspected her reaction was connected to Thrain's warning, Cindy couldn't warm up to the man. But he was a guest and entitled to courtesy from her.

Once the men had left, Cindy continued into the parlor. The only ones still there were Prada, Horus, and Hathor. Horus and Hathor claimed to be an Egyptian god and goddess. At the time they'd registered, Cindy had done her usual mental eye-rolls, but not now. No more eye-rolling until she knew who was real and who wasn't.

Prada waved her over, so she joined them as they sat on the rug in front of the fireplace. Cindy was so tired, she didn't think she could even dredge up a pleasant expression, but luckily she had one more smile squirreled away for an emergency.
